How to backup the registry
In this article we will show you step by step how to backup the registry in Windows 7.
To perform this steps you must be logged on as an administrator. If you are not logged in as an administrator, you can only change the settings that apply to your user account.
We stongly recommend you to export or make a backup copy of the key or the subkey before you make any changes to registry. You can save the backup copy to a specified location, such as a folder on your hard disk or a removable storage device.
Step by step procedure:
- Open the Registry Editor by going to the Start menu and typing regedit into the search box, and press Enter. Administrator permission required. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
- Locate and click the key or subkey that you want to back up.
- Click the File menu, and then click Export.
- In the Save in box, select the location where you want to save the backup copy to, and then type a name for the backup file in the File name box.
- Click Save.
If you want or you need to undo the changes you made on registry, you can just import the backup copy.
